A jobsite where cylindrical objects periodically descend the ramps while personnel ascend fixed ladders is a struck-by incident factory — and struck-by events are among the leading killers in construction. The controls are unglamorous and absolute.
First, the barrels should never be in motion. All materials stored in tiers must be stacked, racked, blocked, interlocked, or otherwise secured to prevent sliding, falling or collapse (29 CFR 1926.250(a)(1)). Round stock gets chocked or racked — gravity plus a ramp is a delivery system for injuries. Housekeeping rules also require debris to be kept cleared from work areas, passageways, and stairs (29 CFR 1926.25(a)); a ramp doubling as a barrel chute fails that test each time it's used.
Second, the people. Anyone working where there is possible danger of head injury from impact or falling or flying objects must be protected by protective helmets (29 CFR 1926.100(a)) — a hard hat is non-negotiable under an active barrel bombardment, though the honest engineering answer is to stop the bombardment rather than armor the workforce. The climbing itself must happen on conforming ladders (29 CFR 1926.1053), and no ladder task includes 'time your ascent between projectiles.'
The pattern worth stealing from the joke: when a hazard is rhythmic and predictable, employers get tempted to treat dodging it as a skill. OSHA's framework never accepts rhythm as a control. Secure the source, clear the path, protect the head — and if a specific individual keeps hurling containers at your crew, that's a workplace violence program conversation, not a hard-hat upgrade.
